Venues have the power to do more than host events — they can become enduring landmarks that shape cities, celebrate culture, and foster community.

In this session, Brett Wightman, Senior Principal & Director - APAC at Populous, shares how stadiums, arenas, and major venues can be designed as civic and cultural anchors — places that reflect local identity, invite public life, and deliver long-term value. Drawing from global projects including Kai Tak Sports Park, Wembley Stadium, ICC Sydney, and Suncorp Stadium, he explores how purposeful design can transform large-scale infrastructure into spaces that resonate far beyond the event itself.

This is a conversation about the future of public space — and how venues, when shaped with intention, can tell a city’s story, bring people together, and stand as lasting symbols of collective meaning.

Curiosity-driven questions to address in the keynote:

● What specific design moves best weave a stadium into its neighborhood’s history, culture, and identity?

● As an industry leader, what does Richard see as the key elements of a successful stadium, and how should they balance performance, placemaking, operations, and governance?

● How can social infrastructure catalyse everyday civic life beyond event days, activating streets, parks, and local businesses year-round?

● Once a stadium opens, what strategies ensure it remains flexible and can evolve and adapt as the city changes?
